A former footballer who helped to drive his team to promotion and one of the greatest days in the club’s history has now launched his own business as a chauffeur.
Mark Rivers was a key player in the successful Crewe Alexandra side who won promotion to the second tier of English football via a Wembley play-off final in 1997. The striker went on to play 295 games and score 69 goals for Crewe during two spells at Gresty Road, from 1993 to 2001 and 2003 to 2006.
Now, Mark has launched his own business, Rivers Corporate Chauffeur, which offers corporate and wedding parties a ride in a sleek BlueTec Mercedes Benz S-Class. Father-of-three Mark, now aged 36, said: “I was going to buy a classic car, either an Austin Martin or a Ferrari and do wedding cars.
“Then I spoke to a friend and he suggested trying the corporate side, but buy something which would be suitable for weddings as well. I got my licence from Cheshire East Council just before Christmas and started getting a few takers.
He added; “I have contacted the PFA (Players Football Association), and they gave me a list of players’ liaison officers with clubs. I thought I’d be ideal, as a former player, to chauffeur Premier League footballers around, but a lot of them need ex-security officers. It’s a new venture, but it’s going well. In the last week I’ve picked up quite a few bookings. I’m enjoying it.’
Mark said he retired aged 31, because he did not want to play for a lower league club to continue his career as an older player.
