Chauffeurs go online in all-new Audi A8 Chauffeurs go online in all-new Audi A8Comments Off

The state-of-the-art online services allow the new A8 to retrieve up-to-date information from the internet via an optional integrated GPRS/EDGE modem in the latest generation MMI navigation plus. The user can search online with Google for points-of-interest directly from within the MMI, the versatile search engine accepting such free text search queries as “delicatessen” or “shoe boutique”. The results are then displayed on the onboard map or used as destinations for route calculation. A8 customers can also plan their navigation destinations in Google Maps or the Audi web portal at home or in the office and retrieve these on demand in the car.

In mid 2010 Audi will further enhance its suite of online services with a new UMTS modem. This enables faster data transfer as well as simultaneous voice and data connections, and allows Audi to set a world first with the integration of Google Earth in the MMI navigation plus.

With Google Earth on the MMI’s 8 inch LCD display the new Audi A8 allows its occupants to discover the world from above through high resolution three-dimensional satellite and aerial imagery for the entire globe, backed up by a worldwide database of photos and information articles. The Google Earth imagery and 3D terrain model are combined with the detailed street network from the onboard navigation database in a seamless integration of online and offline content.

To use the new online services the customer simply needs to insert their SIM card in the MMI Navigation plus or pair their mobile phone with the MMI over the Bluetooth SIM-Access-Profile. Aside from the Customer’s existing mobile phone data plan, no additional contracts are required.

The latest multimedia interface (MMI) navigation plus system that is an integral part of the new A8 features a highly evolved operating concept incorporating a touchpad – known as MMI touch. Also included are an integrated hard disk for navigation, phone and audio data and a graphics processor capable of generating high-quality, three dimensional images. The MMI analyzes navigation data predictively, relaying information to the control units managing the automatic cruise control with Stop & Go, adaptive lights and the 8-speed tiptronic gearbox so that these systems can precisely adapt their function to conditions well in advance.

First shown as a prototype with Google in January 2006 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, USA, the new online services can be experienced in the new A8 as a result of a close collaboration between Audi and Google development teams worldwide.

Will Chauffeurs see 2010 Chrysler 300c updates? Will Chauffeurs see 2010 Chrysler 300c updates?Comments Off

With its refined interior, premium technology features and unmistakable design, the 2010 Chrysler 300 announced for the U.S continues to offer unmatched style, performance and excitement for any budget. The 300C has been an amazing success within the chauffeur industry in the UK since its launch here in 2005.

For those seeking the combination of maximum fuel economy with the panache of the Chrysler 300C, the new 2010 Chrysler 300 Touring offers a fuel-efficient 2.7-litre V-6 engine, providing 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, and even more upscale enhancements, including chromed mirrors and door handles, fog lamps and available steering wheel audio controls.

Upping the ante, the 2010 Chrysler 300C Heritage Edition tops the model lineup. Its legendary 5.7-litre HEMI® V-8 engine with fuel-saving Multi-displacement System (MDS) technology produces 360 horsepower 25 mpg highway capability. Premium amenities, including leather seating with suede inserts, Poplar Burl real-wood trim, Keyless Entry/Keyless Go, Boston Acoustics 5.1 surround sound with Digital Signal Processor (DSP), 20-inch chromed wheels, and performance steering, suspension and shocks, make the 300C Heritage Edition the ultimate Chrysler 300.

For customers who are looking for even more all-weather capability from their Chrysler 300 sedan, all-wheel-drive models feature an active transfer case and front-axle disconnect. No other major manufacturer offers these two independent technologies together. The unique system seamlessly transitions between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive with no driver intervention. When all-wheel drive is not required, the system automatically disconnects the front axle to maximize fuel economy on all-wheel-drive Chrysler 300 models, while still providing the outstanding performance and handling inherent in rear-wheel drive.

The all-new Chrysler 300 was introduced in model-year 2005 marking the brand’s return to rear-wheel drive and the return of the HEMI engine after 50 years. There is no news as yet as to if the UK will see these changes made to the right-hand drive models.

New A8 Shows Its Full Glory New A8 Shows Its Full GloryComments Off

The all-new Audi luxury saloon opens for order this month for first deliveries in spring 2010 – OTR prices from £54,760 to £66,240. Highlights include all-LED headlights, new touch screen Multi Media Interface (MMI) incorporating new ‘anticipatory’ satellite navigation with night vision, Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system with optional sports differential.

Packed inside the even lighter and 24 per cent more rigid evolution of the aluminium Audi Space Frame (ASF) which forms the ‘skeleton’ of the new A8 are myriad new technological advances. These of course include fundamentals such as economy and emissions advantages for the three significantly reworked FSI and TDI engines that will be available from launch – the 3.0-litre V6 TDI with 250PS and 550Nm of torque (up from 233PS and 450Nm), the 4.2-litre V8 TDI with 350PS and 800Nm (up from 326PS and 650Nm) and the 4.2-litre V8 FSI with 372PS and 445Nm (up from 350PS and 440Nm).

The upgraded 4.2-litre FSI benefits from a 13 per cent improvement in fuel economy, taking its combined figure to 29.7mpg and dropping CO2 output to 219g/km. The equivalent V8 TDI gets a 19 per cent boost to 37.2mpg with CO2 emissions down to 199g/km, while the 3.0-litre TDI moves to the top of the luxury saloon class in economy terms with a 22 per cent economy hike to 42.8mpg with CO2 of 174g/km.

During 2010, an even more economy and emissions-focused version of the 3.0-litre TDI unit will be added. Driving the front wheels only, it will combine a 204PS power peak with 47.1mpg economy on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of just 159g/km.

All engines are complemented by recuperation technology which provides further fuel and CO2 savings by recycling a proportion of the wasted kinetic energy which is generated under normal braking and normally dissipated as heat, and storing this temporarily in the vehicle battery to reduce the engine load when the car subsequently accelerates again. The A8 3.0 TDI also saves fuel through its engine start-stop function, cutting engine power at idle when the brake pedal is depressed, and then restarting in just two-tenths of a second when it is released.

The much improved efficiency of these enhanced engines is matched by the new eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission with which all of them work. With an especially high overall gear ratio of 7.0:1, it reduces overall fuel consumption by around six per cent, but is equally notable for its quick and virtually seamless changes.

Satellite navigation influences gear shift strategy
This advanced transmission can also ‘talk’ to the new, next generation MMI Touch in-car infotainment system, networking with the detailed route data supplied by its inbuilt navigation system to factor corners into its gearshift strategy and avoid unnecessary, fuel-sapping gear changes. The state-of-the-art adaptive cruise control and adaptive light swivelling cornering light systems are also influenced by feedback from the navigation unit.

As well as ultra-intelligent 3D navigation mapping, the new touch screen Multi Media Interface, or MMI Touch, can also store audio tracks and telephone data on its sizeable hard disk. To enter a destination or phone number, the driver need only now draw the required letters or numbers with their index finger on the touch screen.

As an option, a GPRS module can also be specified. Fed with news and weather information from the Web by internet service provider Google, it enables A8 drivers to plot detailed routes on a home computer and download them to the navigation system when they start a trip. During 2010, the system will also be upgraded with a UMTS module which will enable Google Earth images to be beamed to the MMI monitor in 3D for navigation purposes. Eventually, full internet connection via UMTS will be possible, making the A8 a mobile WLAN hotspot.

High technology has also filtered even deeper into the chassis of the A8, which already offered sophisticated aluminium suspension refined by adaptive four-mode air springs. This system has been further improved in the interest of ride comfort by newly developed struts with enlarged air capacity, and is now backed up by the Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system. Audi drive select enables the driver to fine-tune throttle response, steering assistance and transmission shift points to suit personal preferences or prevailing road conditions.

The active sport differential which won so much critical acclaim at its debut in the S4 quattro further enhances 4.2 TDI models as standard, and can be added at extra cost for all other models. The new differential enables the latest generation asymmetric quattro system to not only transfer torque between the front and rear axles to counter traction losses, but also between the rear wheels. When the steering wheel is turned or the car accelerated in a corner, power is redirected in a controlled manner to the outer rear wheel, literally pushing the car through the corner. The driver benefits from reduced steering effort and a feeling of even greater adjustability and control. In addition, dynamic steering, allowing alteration of the actual ratio of the steering for optimum feel, can be added at extra cost.

The most rigid body shell in the premium sector helps not only to maximise agility in the new A8, but also to boost safety in conjunction with adaptive restraint systems and the new Audi pre-sense system which is fitted as standard.

In its standard form the pre-sense system analyses the information from the ESP sensors. When they signal maximum brake application or skidding, the control unit intervenes. Depending on the situation, it activates the hazard warning lights and closes the side windows and the sunroof; it also tensions the front seat belts. Electric motors trigger this process, which is reversible – if the situation ends well, the belts are released again.

The system can be expanded at extra cost to include Audi pre-sense front, Audi pre- sense plus and Audi pre-sense rear. These are integrated in the optional adaptive cruise control with stop & go function and Audi side assist systems.

Working with Adaptive Cruise Control stop & go, Audi pre-sense front monitors the traffic in front of the new Audi A8 and supports the driver in multiple stages. The first is a warning signal, and the second a warning jerk in the form of a brief deceleration. If the driver now depresses the pedal, the brake assist system initiates precise braking relative to the preceding vehicle. If the driver remains passive, the third stage follows – autonomous partial braking that slows the A8 at a rate of 3 m/s2. Windows and the sunroof are closed, the hazard warning lights are activated and the seat belts are tensioned.

If the full version of Audi pre-sense plus is on board, a fourth stage comes into play: braking with an initial deceleration of 5 m/s2 followed by maximum braking. This phase is initiated roughly one half second before the collision. While a collision can no longer be avoided in this case, its consequences are greatly reduced – up to impact the A8 has reduced the speed by about 25mph.

The Audi pre-sense rear system mitigates the consequences of a rear end collision. Here, too, it closes the windows and sunroof, tensions the seat belts and moves the memory front seats into the optimum position for passenger protection.

In this safe haven, A8 passengers are surrounded by high-quality workmanship showing attention to the smallest detail, and of course the leading edge technology that defines the Vorsprung durch Technik brand. Swathed in supple Valcona leather, shielded from the elements by double glazing and bathed in soothing LED ambient lighting the interior’s highlights include the Audi Parking System Plus, DAB digital radio, four-zone climate control, Audi Music Interface iPod connection, MMI Touch infotainment incorporating HDD satellite navigation with predictive route technology, cruise control and a keyless go system.

Two specification levels will be available to UK A8 customers – SE and SE Executive – the latter adding to this equipment list features such as electrically operated boot closing, the Audi Parking System Advanced with rear parking camera and larger 19-inch wheels in place of the 18-inch design fitted to SE models.

To create an even more exceptional looking A8, customers will be able to specify all-LED headlights in place of the standard Xenon set-up, and for even greater opulence five-mode seats with ventilation and massage function, a rear seat entertainment package and a 1,400-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Online connectivity, night vision assist capable of marking out pedestrians, Audi side and lane assist and Audi pre-sense expansion packages will also be available to further enhance this technological tour de force.

All-new BMW 5-Series Revealed All-new BMW 5-Series RevealedComments Off

BMW has announced the next chapter in the story of one of the most successful cars ever to have been produced. The new, sixth generation BMW 5 Series Saloon offers customers the perfect blend of class-leading powerplants, unrivalled driving dynamics and a sporting yet elegant design to set a new benchmark in the executive class.

The very first BMW 5 Series Saloon appeared in 1972 and every incarnation since then has raised the bar in terms of design, engineering or technology. BMW’s first diesel engine appeared in a Five, while other generations hailed the introduction of innovations such as all aluminium suspension, Head-up Display and Active Steering.

The latest BMW 5 Series Saloon similarly sets new standards and is the first in its class to feature Auto Start-Stop, an eight-speed automatic transmission and a double-wishbone front suspension. The new BMW 5 Series Saloon has been styled to reflect its almost perfect 50:50 weight distribution with beautifully balanced proportions, short overhangs, a coupé-like flowing roofline and a long, contoured bonnet. The familiar BMW kidney grille stands upright alluding to the car’s sporting pedigree.

The latest BMW has the longest wheelbase in its class at 2,968mm, creating a greater feeling of interior space. This translates into an extra 13mm of knee room for rear passengers, compared to the previous 5 Series, while customers specifying the optional glass sunroof benefit from a larger roof panel that allows light to flood in highlighting the generous rear cabin.

The BMW 5 Series Saloon is as practical as it is elegant and has a 520-litre boot with the option to specify 40:20:40 split folding rear seats. Inside, the cabin features many of the sporting but luxurious quality and comfort features found in the BMW 7 Series. Inclined seven degrees towards the driver, the asymmetrically designed centre console ensures that all controls are comfortably within the reach.

The multifunctional steering wheel has been simplified, putting all of the function keys in one hand and infotainment in the other. The use of Black Panel technology on the instrument panel and centre console, as seen in the BMW 7 Series and the 5 Series Gran Turismo, adds an extra touch of luxury to the cabin. A signature piece of BMW design, Black Panel technology integrates the centre console into the trim of the car.

High-resolution electronic displays are visible when needed, but when not in use discreetly blend in to form an elegant black band across the interior. Class-leading drivetrains Buyers of the BMW 5 Series Saloon will be able to choose between three diesel powerplants and four petrol engines from launch. The biggest seller in the UK is predicted to be the 520d. This 1,995cc four cylinder diesel features the latest generation common-rail direct injection and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry which increases power and efficiency.

Producing 184hp at 4,000rpm, the 520d accelerates from zero to 62mph in 8.1 seconds before going onto a top speed of 141mph (140 for automatic transmission). The peak torque of 380Nm from just 1,900rpm ensures that progress is smooth and swift in any gear. Fuel economy is exceptional with a combined fuel consumption figure of 56.5mpg (54.3mpg)* and a CO2 rating of 132g/km (137g/km)*, making the BMW 520d the most efficient car in its segment. Two straight-six turbocharged engines will complete the diesel line-up; the 530d and the 525d. Both powerplants feature 2,993cc units with an all aluminium crankcase. The 530d is available with increased power and performance to record 245hp at 4,000rpm and peak torque of 540Nm from as low as 1,750rpm.

With the introduction of upgraded piezo-injectors, the BMW 530d emits just 166g/km, while averaging a combined consumption figure of 44.8mpg. A car equipped with an automatic transmission improves on these figures further recording 162g/km and 45.6mpg. Regardless of chosen transmission the BMW 530d is capable of accelerating from zero to 62mph in just 6.3 seconds and attaining an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. The new 525d sets a new benchmark for efficiency in a six-cylinder diesel with CO2 emissions of 162g/km (automatic transmission is 161g/km) and an average fuel consumption of 45.6mpg (46.3mpg). But performance is not compromised with a maximum power output of 204hp at 4,000rpm and 450Nm of maximum torque consistently from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm. This allows acceleration from zero to 62mph in just 7.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 147mph. Joining the diesel-powered cars from launch are three straight-six petrol engines the 523i, 528i and the 535i.

The 535i is the first engine to combine a single turbocharged engine with High Precision Direct Injection and VALVETRONIC – BMW’s own system that controls how much the engine’s valves open for optimum efficiency. These measures allow the engine to meet strict emissions regulations whilst delivering optimum performance with a zero to 62mph time of 6.0 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. Consumption and emissions figures reflect its technological prowess with 33.2mpg (33.6mpg) on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 199g/km (195g/km). The naturally aspirated 523i and 528i both have an upgraded High Precision Direct Injection system resulting in the fast revving driving characteristic, typical of BMW, combined with low fuel consumption and emissions. In the BMW 523i the unit delivers maximum output of 204hp at 6,100 rpm and a peak torque of 270Nm from 1,500 all the way through to 4,250 rpm ensuring smooth progression at any speed. This power translates into a zero to 62mph speed of 7.9 seconds (8.2 seconds) with a top speed of 148mph (145mph).

Ultimately this ends up with emissions of 177g/km (178g/km) and a combined consumption of 37.2mpg. The BMW 528i extends the performance envelope by producing 258hp at 6,600rpm and 310Nm of torque from 2,600-5,000rpm. This equates to a zero to 62mph time of 6.6 seconds (6.7 seconds) and an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. The sporting performance is not to the detriment of economy and emissions and the 528i records a combined consumption figure of 36.2mpg (37.2mpg) and CO2 emissions of 182g/km (178g/km). Topping the range is the BMW 550i which is powered by an acclaimed 407hp 4,395cc V8 engine.

With its twin-turbocharger technology, the 550i offers outstanding performance with a zero to 62mph time of just 5.0 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. Peak torque of 600Nm is available consistently between 1,750rpm and 4,500rpm. The BMW 550i logs a combined consumption figure of 27.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 243g/km. Award-winning EfficientDynamics as standard the new BMW 5 Series Saloon comes with an array of EfficientDynamics technologies. The BMW 520d is the first 5 Series to come with Auto Start-Stop, reducing the engine idle period when coming to a short stop.

All manual gearboxes will also come with an Optimum gearshift indicator to help drivers know when to change gear to optimise the car’s efficiency. Brake Energy Regeneration, which recharges the vehicle’s battery during engine over-run, is part of the 5 Series Saloon’s standard specification. Active Aerodynamics also play a part in keeping emissions low and performance high by closing off the air cooling flaps behind the kidney grills to improve the aerodynamics of the car and performance on cold starts. Low rolling resistance tyres also feature to improve efficiency still further. Transmission Benefiting from dry sump lubrication, the BMW 5 Series Saloon comes as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox which has been optimised compared to previous transmissions for greater efficiency.

A redesigned gearshift leaver and enhanced internal packaging have resulted in a smoother, sportier gearshift. The range topping 550i comes as standard with BMW’s new eight-speed automatic transmission bringing the luxury and refinement of the 7 Series to the 550i. Whilst being six percent more fuel efficient, the weight and size are unaffected. Buyers of all variants can specify the eight-speed automatic gearbox or an eight-speed Sport automatic transmission with Formula One style steering wheel mounted paddles for those that prefer more enthusiastic performance.

Bespoke chassis configurator For those BMW 5 Series Saloon models specified with Variable Damper Control or Adaptive Drive packages, the Drive Dynamic Control (DDC) chassis configurator is fitted to enhance ride and handling still further. DDC allows for fine tuning of the chassis with the choice of Normal, Comfort, Sport and Sport+. Each mode changes the levels of steering assistance, throttle response, gear change characteristics, degree of Dynamic Stability Control interaction and, courtesy of adjustable dampers, the ride and handling characteristics. The combination of a double wishbone front axle and a multilink rear axle ensures that occupants are provided with a composed ride whilst still maintaining supreme driving dynamics.

For the first time the 5 Series Saloon comes with Electric Power Steering with Servotronic assistance for enhanced driving dynamics and comfort, thus saving weight and helping to reduce emissions. Highest ever standard specification The BMW 5 Series Saloon features the highest ever level of standard specification for the model. All models now come with Dakota leather upholstery, BMW Professional Radio and Bluetooth telephone preparation compared to the previous (E60) BMW 5 Series Saloon. Six-cylinder engine derivatives additionally gain USB audio interface and Ambient lighting, while the BMW 550i has the eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. The BMW 520d additionally benefits from full automatic air-conditioning system as standard. The increase in standard specification means the latest BMW 5 Series Saloon, when compared like for like with the previous car, represents excellent value for money. For example, the (E60) BMW 520d SE Saloon costs £27,430 OTR** while the new model will be priced at £27,555 OTR**, but comes with Dakota leather, BMW Professional radio and Bluetooth telephone preparation, previously £1,340, £365 and £525 options.

Innovative new optional equipment The BMW 5 Series Saloon is the first BMW to be offered with Park Assist aimed at enhancing driver convenience. Activated by a signal from the airbag ECU in the event of a rear impact, the inflator slides a piston into the headrest, unlocking a mechanism that projects the headrest forwards and upwards, reducing the risk of whiplash injury.

The driver’s seat also has a new return/away function. Linked to a similar function that moves the steering wheel, this automatically slides the seat back by up to 50mm when the driver unbuckles the seatbelt and turns the engine off. The seat returns to its selected driving position once the car is started again.

For the new model year the LS 600h is available with the Lexus Rear Seat Relaxation Pack for the first time in conjunction with a five-seat configuration.

The premium seat arrangement has a 40:20:40 design with an upper seatback reclining mechanism, fully retractable leg and footrest and lower back massage function, all operated using a remote controller. It also offers different levels of massage using an array of eight pneumatic chambers built into the seatback, and lumbar and shoulder areas.

The horizontal suspension position of the rear seat has been moved forwards 45mm to improve fit around the hips and the shape of the seat surface over the outer edges has been plumped up by around 10mm for better support.

The centre armrest has been redesigned too, fitted with a sliding lid and housing controls for the seats, earphone jack points and the remote control for the relaxation system. The seats have integral side airbags and the seat behind the front passenger in the Rear Seat Relaxation Pack has a seat cushion airbag to give the occupant extra restraint below the hips in the event of a collision.

Models fitted with the Rear Seat Relaxation Pack also offer an extra 40mm in the forward sliding range of the front passenger seat. Operated in conjunction with the retractable leg and foot rest, this allows the seat to be moved to its full front or return position using a switch in the rear centre armrest, or on the shoulder of the seat itself. When the front set is moved to its furthest forward position, its headrest is automatically retracted to give a clearer view from the rear.

Reducing the size of the rear air conditioning unit has further increased boot capacity by approximately 35 litres. The new LS600 is available to order now.

The Fate Of The Phaeton The Fate Of The PhaetonComments Off

In 2003, the Phaeton was revealed to the chauffeur industry, bringing with it a refreshing change from the other German luxury saloons on the market.

However, there were big three problems – the engine range, the brand and the price.

Firstly, When the Phaeton was launched, the only engines on offer were the 6.0 W12, a 5.0 V10 diesel and a V6 petrol – so there was no real viable option for the chauffeur. On top of that, the long-wheel base model hadn’t even been released, so there was no reason for a chauffeur to buy it and with its price tag of £42,000 for the base model – the Phaeton was in for a very tough ride.

If a chauffeur operates a Mercedes-Benz for example, it is an easy sell. On the other-hand, if they operated a Phaeton, how would they sell it to their clients? A luxury Volkswagen is not easy for some people to imagine, and that is exactly what every chauffeur feared if they put the Phaeton on their fleets.

Customers just didn’t know what the car was, and they wouldn’t pay good money to be chauffeured in a Volkswagen.

But it wasn’t to end there for the Phaeton – it soon become obviously that no one was buying it, which meant there a risk of it being discontinued, which was a pity because it offered everything you would need from a luxury car.

It rides extremely well, and the later released diesel engines offer excellent economy and it looks great. Despite the badge, it is a well worthy as a chauffeur car.

However, VW continued to make the Phaeton as the industry slowly realised it was a fantastic car and the Phaeton offered a more discreet vehicle for blue chip companies and local authorities. The man in the street wouldn’t know any different from a standard Passat – therefore making it look as if your local mayor was being driven in a family saloon.

There is now a 2009 facelift model and from the outside there are little changes, but on the inside, there’s an all-new 7inch infotainment system, as the GPS system on the old Phaeton was probably as bad as it could get – in fact the new system is so good, the VAG group has put it in the Skoda Superb!

You basically get the same as you would in similar systems in other cars, DVD player, touch screen operations, Bluetooth technology (which doesn’t work with my Blackberry), and the Phaeton even gives you the option of adjusting the air suspension settings, which makes riding in the back even better for the client.

The attention to detail is excellent, you really do feel as if you are in a high-end luxury car, however I admit there are places where VW could have used some better materials rather than cheap plastic in certain places.

The new 3 litre V6 diesel engine in our long-wheel base model is impressive – it delivers 230bhp and returns around 31mpg , and its smooth, punchy and extremely quiet.

In the back, well you couldn’t really wish for much more space and legroom, the seats are relatively comfortable, however, if reclining and heated seats were fitted as standard on the long-wheel base then it would be a real winner.

If I had to choose a chauffeur car to operate, I would be extremely tempted with this exact car – its brilliant. However, more bad news for the Phaeton I’m afraid. Looking online I found a Phaeton V10 diesel with 50,000 miles on the clock for – wait for it – £17,000.

So the secret is, if you are in the market for an alternative to the Mercedes-Benz and BMW brands, then the Phaeton is for you – but look at used models first.

On A Budget With The Mercedes-Benz C220 CDi On A Budget With The Mercedes-Benz C220 CDiComments Off

When times are hard and your fleet of top-end luxury cars are pounding the bank account, the hardest step to take would be downgrading to cheaper vehicles.

Natural instincts would say your clients would not be happy travelling in something which does not provide as much luxury in the rear, especially if they are paying the same price.

In a series of articles, thechauffeur.com discovers the vehicles you could consider when changing your fleet. Will these cheaper vehicles keep the customer happy, and will they provide the performance, image and status they expect?

There is no doubt the Mercedes-Benz brand is the most popular marque within the chauffeur and luxury limousine markets. Chauffeurs have been buying the S-Class ever since it was invented all those decades ago.

It has always been the client’s favourite, due to the famous three-point star, stunning image, acres of legroom in the long-wheel base models and chauffeurs love them due to the economical engines and ‘saleability’ to clients.

The C-Class is not the cheapest of the Merc range by far, but it differs greatly to the S-Class. Base models can be very basic and powerless, but hi-end versions can be surprisingly good but then, being a Mercedes, you will always pay the price.

Our test C220 CDi Sport Estate model certainly looked the part. In off-white, privacy glass all-round and stunning AMG body styling made the C-Class stand-out from any other. If this pulled-up outside the clients house, then they would definitely know this model is better than most.

But would it keep them happy? There are little toys in the rear, well none in fact. Legroom is also very limited, but suitable for a 6ft passenger for a short period of time. As our model is the Sport version, the ride is harsh, far too hard to keep it un-noticeable from Sir in the back.

On the up side – the estate version offers tonnes of boot space, enough for three passengers and suitcases, which makes this vehicle perfect for the airport runs – and at 47mpg, it certainly won’t break the bank in fuel.

The manual gearbox would have to go – and smaller wheels with more tyre on them would also be on the list. Generally the vehicle would make a very good private hire vehicle, but for the same price as a basic E-Class, it does make me wonder if it is over-priced.
